Sample Essay: Lessons Learned from Building a School in Costa Rica

The summer after my sophomore year of high school, I traveled to a rural village in Costa Rica with a group of volunteers from my church. We were there to help build a school for the local children, but I never anticipated how much that experience would shape me and my understanding of the world.

The work was hard, and the heat was oppressive, but we were all determined to make a difference. As we worked alongside the local community members, I began to realize that we were not there to simply "help" them. Instead, we were learning from them, about their culture, their way of life, and their resilience in the face of challenges.

I remember one afternoon, we took a break from working to play soccer with the children. Despite the language barrier, we all laughed and played together, and I realized that our shared humanity transcended any cultural differences.

As the days passed, I found myself becoming more connected to the people and the place. The beauty of the land, the kindness of the people, and the simplicity of life there all spoke to me in a profound way.

When I returned home, I felt changed. I had a new appreciation for the privileges and opportunities I had, and a new understanding of the interconnectedness of the world. I realized that true change does not come from a single act of charity, but from building relationships, listening to others, and working together towards a common goal.

Since that trip, I have continued to seek out opportunities to learn about and engage with different cultures. I have also become more involved in social justice causes, recognizing that my own experiences and privileges come with a responsibility to fight for equality and justice for all.

In the end, my experience in Costa Rica sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of myself and others. It taught me the importance of empathy, humility, and the power of relationships to effect change in the world.
