Growing up, I never thought much of comics. They seemed like a trivial form of entertainment, something that only children read. It wasn't until I stumbled upon a graphic novel in the library one day that I realized how wrong I was.
The book was "Maus" by Art Spiegelman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir about his father's experience as a Holocaust survivor. The use of anthropomorphic animals to tell the story of the Holocaust was jarring and unexpected, but it made the subject matter more accessible and poignant. I was captivated by the way Spiegelman used the visual medium to convey complex emotions and ideas.
From that moment on, I became an avid reader of comics and graphic novels. I found that the medium had evolved far beyond the simple superhero stories I had dismissed as a child.
